An accurate reference surface for Dutch coastal waters
The Board of the Technology Foundation STW has awarded grants to five new technical-scientific projects, including a TU Delft project aimed at creating an accurate and easily verifiable reference surface for Dutch coastal waters.

Evacuation in the Netherlands is not pointless
An evacuation in the event of flooding is not as pointless for the Netherlands as is generally assumed. This is one of the conclusions reached by Olga Huibregtse, who received her doctorate for research on this subject on Monday 18 February.

Erik Schlangen selected for TED.com
The talk by Erik Schlangen, held at TEDxDelft 2012, has been selected by the TED.com editors to be featured on www.ted.com. Only 1% of all worldwide TEDx talks organised is selected. Schlangen amazed his audience at TEDxDelft by repairing a broken piece of asphalt through heating it in a microwave oven – on stage.

UfD-Cofely Energy Efficiency Prizes and LaunchLab prize handed out
The 4th UfD-Cofely Energy Efficiency Awards were presented on 22 February. These awards are given to students who have set out in detail innovative ideas in their master’s theses in the areas of sustainable energy sources, energy saving or CO-2 reduction. Lourens Meijer, Masterstudent Water Resource Management, took the main prize.

Participants wanted for an experiment into concert behaviour
The Transport & Planning department is conducting PhD research into the choices people make under various circumstances. As of 12 March 2013, a number of experiments will start. During one of these a concert situation will be simulated and the visitors' behaviour will be studied.

35,000 TU Delft publications online!
Last week the 35,000th article was uploaded by CEG PhD candidate Vana Tsimopoulou to the TU Delft Repository. The TU Delft Repository contains scientific publications and graduation theses, written by researchers and students of TU Delft. They are all Open Access publications, which means they are freely accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

On May 21st 2013 Thomas Hollmann, a MSc Petroleum Engineering student, will embark on an 8-month motorcycle trip spanning over 30,000 kilometres, together with his friend Broos van Alphen.
